MGM Resorts, the global entertainment and hospitality company, has announced the addition of more than 1,000 new games at its Empire City Casino in New York. The addition of the prestigious gaming collection to the sixth largest casino floor in the U.S. and the largest in the company’s portfolio represents a replacement of almost 20% of the Empire City Casino’s 5,000 slots and electronic table games.

Extensive upgrade:

The extensive upgrade of the casino floor offerings at the property acquired by MGM in 2019 includes some of the most popular gaming titles on a global scale presented by MGM as “the most up-to-date titles in gaming,” including Light & Wonder‘s 88 Fortunes Money Coins and Dancing Drums Explosion, Konami Gaming’s Ba Fang Jin Bao and Aristocrat’s Mighty Cash Double Up.

The addition of the prestigious contingent is the result of a large number of the market research and industry reports with an aim to refresh, update, and upgrade the Empire City Casino‘s portfolio after special regulations – recently passed by the New York State Gaming Association – enabled …

The efforts to get gaming legalized in Texas continued as Las Vegas Sands representatives met with North Texas leaders. The casino and hospitality powerhouse hopes to secure enough support to get resort-style casinos legalized in the state finally.

While experts predict that gambling could create as many as 70,000 new permanent jobs and over twice as many construction jobs, some lawmakers are still reluctant to back casino resorts.

Texas Is a Huge Untapped Market

Texas has cemented itself as one of the more conservative states when it comes to gambling. Previous efforts to legalize various verticals have fallen through without leading to any significant change.

However, Las Vegas Sands remains bullish on the Lone Star State. As reported by Dallas Morning News, LVS lobbyists met with leaders from North Texas to discuss the matter. Assembled by the North Texas Commission and the Texas Association of Business, the meeting sought to evaluate the potential impact casino gaming could have on Texas.

The commission seeks to create an exploratory comm…

From brats and beers to rats and cats, Kalamba Games has taken that giant leap with its latest online slot title, Rumble Ratz Megaways. Billed as its “first premium Megaways™ title,” the game transports players to the Middle Ages where a band of adorable rats tries to outwit a cat in search of large stores of cheese and a max win of around 5,000x!

While it was powered by Relax Gaming and released with little to no fanfare, technically, the sci-fi-themed Machina Megaways slot was the first title from Kalamba to incorporate the popular game engine from Australian software developer Big Time Gaming (BTG). The Malta and Krakow-based game studio signed an agreement with BTG for the license back in May.

Anyway, back to the business at hand. Rumble Ratz Megaways is set in a quaint old English kitchen where you’ll find various light sources such as candles, lanterns, a stone fireplace and a cast iron stove, along with hanging pans, barrels, and a growling feline that pokes its head up around the game panel keeping watch. There are also wedges and bits of K-Cash cheese symbols on round cutting boards positioned atop the playing board.

One such company is MGM Resorts International which owns the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The gross gaming revenue generated by the property in 2022 was enough to place it as the most profitable casino outside of Nevada.

Regional Casinos Caught in an (Un)fair Race

National Harbor, which services both Maryland and Washington, DC, has been able to leapfrog over other properties such as Resorts World New York in Queens, securing a small but sufficient advantage to win it the accolade.

The news was confirmed by the American Gaming Association (AGA) which keeps stock of such developments in the commercial gaming market in the United States. The statement said:

At the property level, MGM National Harbor in Maryland narrowly surpassed Resorts World New York City in Queens, New York as the highest grossing commercial casino in terms of gaming revenue outside of Nevada.

A review of the websites of Cotai casino resorts indicates that at least three of them are closed, as well as multiple Cotai food and beverage outlets. The closures are seemingly due to the Covid-19 case count reaching one-sixth of the Macau population.

Covid-19 forcing suspensions:

Operators have given no reasons for closures. Though these may be sought in the latest wave of Covid-19 infections that hit Macau after the region had gradually opened in December. The opening might in turn have caused casino staff shortages forcing casinos to suspend operations until further notice.

Elsie Ao Ieong U, Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture said on Friday that around 115,000, or one-sixth of the Macau citizens, had tested positive for Covid-19 by that time. The increased number of infections followed a recent relaxation of prevention rules led by changes to mainland China’s Covid-19 policy.

Staff shortages:

In the past few days, a number of the city’s shops and services have advised the public of closures or reduced hours due to staff sick leaves. Also, the city’s leader, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, stated on Saturday that public servic…

Macau’s Financial Services Bureau released the results for the first quarter of 2024 on Monday, April 22, 2024, and the city earned 116.8% more on taxes than in the same period last year.

A Starfield mod that replaces the game’s native FSR 2.2 support with DLSS 3.5 and enables Frame Generation has had its DRM cracked. The premium mod had been previously locked behind a Patreon paywall to support the mod’s developer, PureDark, but has swiftly been removed by a popular cracking website.

Starfield offers so-far exclusive support for AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.2 (FSR 2.2)—a decision that raised the hackles of many on the internet. It’s generally seen to be a result of AMD’s partnership with Bethesda for the game, and not for technical reasons. Somewhat proven by how swiftly modders have since added DLSS and XeSS support into the game’s settings menu.

There are multiple mods already available over on Nexus Mods that promise to swap out AMD’s own upscaler for Nvidia or Intel’s. One from PureDark and two from LukeFZ.

After powering through Nightdive’s superb System Shock Remake, former Looking Glass developer Marc LeBlanc has returned to Twitch and YouTube to stream The Black Parade, a lauded mod that presents an interquel between the classic Looking Glass stealth games, Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age.

There was a time in my early teenagehood where I was so entrenched in anime and JRPG brain rot that I convinced myself I was talented enough to make a game all of my own. That never happened, of course, but the one thing I do remember from that time was how much fun I had poking around in RPG Maker. It’s a great little bit of software that’s birthed some bangers like Corpse Party, To the Moon and Mad Father. And right now, one of its older versions is totally free on Steam.

It’s probably not the best RPG Maker on the market these days—though the actual answer on which one is depends on who you ask—but for no cost, it’s a great entry point to dabbling with developing a wee RPG of your own. RPG Maker XP has been pretty widely used over the years, and was the engine behind the now-dead Pokémon Uranium fan game. The toolset is sat at a 93% “Overall Positive” review on Steam too, so it’s ce…

It’s hard to explain the appeal of the various Truck Simulator games to someone who hasn’t played them. They’re almost like chill-out games, an experience where you do all the thinking at the start (your route and cargo) before relaxing for a while with the radio and watching the scenery drift by. People did a lot of things to pass time during the early pandemic lockdowns: learn to play the guitar, make sourdough starter, spray their groceries with disinfectant. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree earned an immediate reputation for its punishing difficulty, to the point that it suffered a brief barrage of negative reviews from players who thought its boss fights were excessively brutal. Prosecutors in the Tokyo District Court are pushing for a heavy punishment for Sonic and Balan Wonderworld creator Yuji Naka, Abema Times (via VGC) reports. They want to hit Naka with a 2.5 year sentence and a ¥2.5 million fine (around $18,000/£14,000), as well as a “supplementary penalty” of ¥170 million (around $1.2 million/£975,000). Prosecutors have lambasted the game designer for showing “no signs of remorse” over his actions.

The push by the prosecution comes only three months after Naka admitted guilt of insider trading on his first day in court in March this year. Naka was accused of using inside knowledge from his position at Square Enix to buy shares in ATeam and Aiming Inc before their partnerships with the publisher (on Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier and Dragon Quest Tact, respectively) were publicly announced. When the collaboration went public, Naka’s shares are alleged to have shot up in value, netting the creator a reported profit of around $146,000.

Like many PC gamers across the world, I was appalled when I heard about the shuttering of Arkane Austin by Microsoft. Despite the studio’s recent woe with Redfall, a game described by some commentators as one where ‘executives ruined everything’, I’d presumed that its previously stellar track record and new ownership by a financial juggernaut would insulate it from the tsunami of gaming industry job losses we’ve witnessed over the last year.

But no, Arkane Austin, the studio that made the immersive sim masterpiece that is Prey, as well as contributed to probably my favourite gaming series of the past 15 years, Dishonored, is now gone, leaving nothing but a trail of ‘fury and heartbreak’ throughout the gaming community. Personally, I feel much of that discontentment comes from the powerlessness of being unable to do anything to rectify this.

The only thing I thought to do when I heard the news is to replay Arkane Austin’s greatest hits and remember what awesomeness it delivered up to the release of Redfall. As a huge Arkane fan, I already own most of its back catalogue, including its greatest work, Prey, but if you haven’t played this then, in some sort of co…

It’s been a rough couple of years for the games industry—and even laying it out like that feels like an understatement. Back in February, the number of layoffs and studio closures were already numerous enough to fit into a horrifying chart, and things haven’t exactly slowed down since.

One of the more high-profile recent shocks came from Microsoft, which shut down studios Arkane Austin—developers of Prey and Dishonoured—as well as Tango Gameworks, the studio behind surprise hit Hi-Fi Rush.

It was an especially messed-up situation because, as plenty of developers noted in the aftermath: A studio probably shouldn’t sink after a single flop like Redfall, but even if they do make an excellent game, that still won’t save them from the margin-fuelled manoeuvres of executives who can’t seem to put a straight answer together that justifies putting hundreds out of work.

To commemorate some of the recent losses, New Blood Interactive—the publisher behind games like Ultrakill and Gloomwood—rented a billboard in downtown Los Angeles to express posthumous frustration for the waste in a turbulent industry ruled by acquisitions of unim…

Baldur’s Gate 3 has voiced narration—a lot of it, as I’ve personally confirmed by playing the dang thing while having the sound turned on. I recently had the pleasure of speaking to the voice behind the game’s reams and reams of narration, Amelia Tyler, earlier this week.

While Tyler’s dulcet tones do stay largely consistent, there are noticeable differences if you play the game’s different origin characters. She’s on record as having done over a dozen different narration styles for the game, each representing a different character’s inner voice.

Not for every single line of narration, as Tyler assures me, but for key moments? Absolutely. “When we started off recording the narration for the early access version, it was very much a one-note narration style … but with much more of an attitude. The brief I was given was ‘Scar from the Lion King’.”

Granted, that’s something we knew already from her past interviews. However, she explains why they shifted away from smarmy judgement to inner monologue, namely, that it would get exhausting to be judged all the time. Instead, “we wanted [the narration] to echo the choices the pl…

After six years, Blizzard is bringing back one of the most popular Overwatch skins to date. The coveted Pink Mercy skin will return, along with a new rose gold variant, on June 25 as part of another campaign to raise money for breast cancer research with the BCRF.

The original Pink Mercy skin will cost $15 and the new rose gold version will be included in a $20 bundle with other cosmetics. Blizzard says 100% of the purchase price (excluding platform fees and taxes) will be donated to the BCRF after the campaign ends on July 8.

In 2018, enough people bought the Pink Mercy skin to raise $12.7 million, which has remained the largest single donation ever made to the BCRF. And you can tell, because any Overwatch 1 Mercy main you meet keeps the skin in regular rotation. It’s one of the few skins she has that recolors her wings while she’s flying in her ultimate, giving them a bright pink glow. It also has sparkly sound effects.

The new version of the skin is essentially the same with rose gold accents on her suit, and her matching hair now ends with pink tips. Someone at Blizzard knew exactly how to reel in people like me who don’t even play Mercy much anymore. It’ll…
